Girl Scouts Introduce College Knowledge Badge

The Girl Scouts have introduced their first badge dedicated to college exploration.

The College Knowledge Badge — launched in July —is for scouts in grades 11 and 12.

“By showing girls how to research the admission process, financial aid, and other key factors, our College Knowledge Badge meets a specific need and addresses the life skills girls have told us they’re interested in—and that many don’t find support for outside of Girl Scouts,” according to a recent post on the organization’s blog.

The badge is one of 30 new offerings introduced last month by the Girl Scouts. Other new badges encourage students in grades six through 12 to explore programming, robotics, and environmental stewardship.

To earn the College Knowledge Badge, girls must show that they’ve explored their postsecondary options, started the admission process, made a financial plan, learned success skills, and started to build healthy habits.

  1. This is a little concerning. I am not sure how they will go forward with this but a lot of mid-information can occur. It will also be possible that some will be done well and some will not. I would love to work with a troop in our area. As a College Counselor, I am glad they see the need but hope it is done well

    1. As a Girl Scouts troop leader and a high school counselor, I’m sure a troop would be more than willing to accept your assistance. If you reach out to your local GS council, they should be able (and very willing) to connect you.

  2. As the parent of a Girl Scout junior, I think this is a great idea. However I think it should start earlier like 9th or 10th grade. Perhaps even another badge for middle school age students. I agree with the first comment that I would be happy to work with a troop in the Philadelphia area to assist with this.
