{"id":762,"date":"2017-04-26T09:04:12","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T13:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=762"},"modified":"2017-04-28T14:39:54","modified_gmt":"2017-04-28T18:39:54","slug":"legislative-update-affiliates-ramp-up-advocacy-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/04\/26\/legislative-update-affiliates-ramp-up-advocacy-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative Update: Affiliates Ramp Up Advocacy Efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After last month\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/03\/06\/nacac-members-meet-with-congressional-leaders\/\">successful Advocacy Day <\/a>in Washington, DC, advocacy efforts within many NACAC affiliates are on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past several months, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee have hosted SACAC legislative days. Because SACAC is a regional affiliate, advocacy days take place in specific states, allowing members to meet with their own legislators and impact students where they live.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Other states served by SACAC took their own unique approach to advocacy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Louisiana\u2019s legislative day, led <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-763 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SACAC-Legislative-Day-2017-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"sacac-legislative-day-2017\" width=\"221\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SACAC-Legislative-Day-2017-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SACAC-Legislative-Day-2017-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SACAC-Legislative-Day-2017.jpg 905w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/>by Christy Sevier, included a chance to listen to the Board of Regents and Louisiana State University\u2019s chancellor testify in front of the subcommittee on higher education. Attendees learned about relevant bills moving through the legislature and then had the opportunity to watch the legislative process in action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-764 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Power-Hour-300x155.png\" alt=\"power-hour\" width=\"182\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Power-Hour-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Power-Hour-768x396.png 768w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Power-Hour-1024x529.png 1024w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Power-Hour.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 182px) 100vw, 182px\" \/>Florida launched its \u201cPo<br \/>\nwer Hour\u201d \u2014 a one-hour webinar organized by Amanda Lopez that detailed the state\u2019s legislative landscape as well as the legislative priorities of SACAC and NACAC. In states as large as Florida, providing this information without requiring a trip to the capitol allows for more advocates to learn about legislative changes and prepare to advocate at the local level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As many states begin to wind down their legislative sessions, advocacy for NACAC and affiliate priorities is critical. Legislation is made at the federal, state, and local levels, making regional outreach extremely important.<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s Texas, Rocky Mountain, and Southern <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tacac.org\/annual-conference\">Super Conference<\/a> featured legislative highlights from Mike Rose, NACAC\u2019s director of government relations; and Rick Clark, chair of NACAC\u2019s Government Relations committee.
