Looking for ways to encourage more of your students to pursue majors in science, technology, engineering, or math?<\/p>\n

Efforts need to go beyond college-prep coursework, according to a paper\u00a0published in 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Students who succeed in developing an identity as a \u201cmath person\u201d are more likely than their peers to go on to study STEM subjects in college, data show.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need to become interested in math or recognized for your math ability to continue on,\u201d Zahra Hazari, one of the study\u2019s researchers, told The Hechinger Report<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Competence alone is not enough, she noted.<\/p>\n

Hazari’s research can help explain why more high school students who earn A\u2019s in math don\u2019t study quantitative subjects in college.<\/p>\n

The disconnect is especially common among young women.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they feel that they have the abilities, and they\u2019re never recognized, then they\u2019re even less likely to become math people,\u201d Hazari said.<\/p>\n

The findings are based on a survey of more than 9,000 college calculus students. A genuine interest in the mathematics, as well as recognition of one’s abilities, had the strongest influence on students\u2019 \u201cmath identity,” according to researchers.<\/p>\n

Hazari is working on another paper examining the ways educators and others can better acknowledge students\u2019 mathematical prowess.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about praise,\u201d she told The Hechinger Report<\/em>. Instead, Hazari urges teachers and parents to create opportunities for children to embrace their math expertise.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re playing this game of trying to empower people in your classroom,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s lots of ways to facilitate it; you have to become more conscious that you\u2019re going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
