{"id":708,"date":"2017-04-10T12:44:08","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T16:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=708"},"modified":"2017-04-10T12:44:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-10T16:44:51","slug":"math-identity-prepares-students-for-stem-majors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/04\/10\/math-identity-prepares-students-for-stem-majors\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Math Identity\u2019 Prepares Students for STEM Majors"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-709\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-709\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/math_girl-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"iStock\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/math_girl-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/math_girl.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Looking for ways to encourage more of your students to pursue majors in science, technology, engineering, or math?<\/p>\n<p>Efforts need to go beyond college-prep coursework, <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/cdev.12363\/abstract\">according to a paper\u00a0published in 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students who succeed in developing an identity as a \u201cmath person\u201d are more likely than their peers to go on to study STEM subjects in college, data show.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to become interested in math or recognized for your math ability to continue on,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/why-many-students-with-as-in-math-dont-major-in-it\/\">Zahra Hazari, one of the study\u2019s researchers, told <em>The Hechinger Report<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Competence alone is not enough, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Hazari&#8217;s research can help explain why more high school students who earn A\u2019s in math don\u2019t study quantitative subjects in college.<\/p>\n<p>The disconnect is especially common among young women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they feel that they have the abilities, and they\u2019re never recognized, then they\u2019re even less likely to become math people,\u201d Hazari said.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are based on a survey of more than 9,000 college calculus students. A genuine interest in the mathematics, as well as recognition of one&#8217;s abilities, had the strongest influence on students\u2019 \u201cmath identity,&#8221; according to researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Hazari is working on another paper examining the ways educators and others can better acknowledge students\u2019 mathematical prowess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about praise,\u201d she told <em>The Hechinger Report<\/em>.
