{"id":617,"date":"2017-03-13T11:53:57","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T15:53:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=617"},"modified":"2017-03-13T12:18:23","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:18:23","slug":"survey-applications-from-international-students-decrease-amid-perceptions-that-us-is-less-welcoming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/03\/13\/survey-applications-from-international-students-decrease-amid-perceptions-that-us-is-less-welcoming\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Applications from International Students Decrease Amid Perceptions that US is Less Welcoming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacrao.org\/docs\/default-source\/TrendTopic\/Immigration\/intl-survey-results-released.pdf?sfvrsn=0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-618 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/intlreport-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"intlreport\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/intlreport-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/intlreport.jpg 515w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a>Nearly four in 10 colleges have seen drops in applications from international students, and recruitment officials report that families are exhibiting \u201ca great deal of concern\u201d about how their students will be treated in the US, according to early findings from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacrao.org\/docs\/default-source\/TrendTopic\/Immigration\/intl-survey-results-released.pdf?sfvrsn=0\">recent survey<\/a> of more than 250 US colleges and universities.<\/p>\n<p>The survey \u2014 conducted last month by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacrao.org\/\">AACRAO <\/a>in cooperation with NACAC, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalacac.org\/\">International ACAC<\/a>, and three other higher education associations \u2014 shows that 39 percent of respondents reported an overall drop in international applications for fall 2017, with the highest number of institutions reporting declines in applications from the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Institutions also reported drops in applications from students in India and China. Currently, those two countries are home to nearly half of all international students studying in the US.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past year, international educators expressed concern that the political discourse surrounding foreign nationals in the US leading up to the November 2016 US presidential election could be damaging to international student recruitment efforts,\u201d AACRAO noted in a release of early findings. \u201c\u2026This report provides a snapshot of foreign applications to US higher education institutions, initiates a dialogue, and should assist institutions as they forecast and prepare for what might lie ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full report won\u2019t be available until March 30, but its topline findings are already generating lots of talk within the college admission profession.<\/p>\n<p>According to the survey, the most frequently noted concerns of international students and their families, as reported by institution-based professionals, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perceptions of a rise in student visa denials at US embassies and consulates in China, India, and Nepal.<\/li>\n<li>Perception that the climate in the US is now less welcoming to individuals from other countries.<\/li>\n<li>Concerns that benefits and restrictions around visas could change, especially around the ability to travel, re-entry after travel, and employment opportunities.<\/li>\n<li>Concerns that the executive order travel ban might expand to include additional countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacrao.org\/docs\/default-source\/TrendTopic\/Immigration\/intl-survey-results-released.pdf?sfvrsn=0\">See more early findings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/news--publications\/newsroom\/newexecutiveorderonforeignnationals\/\">read NACAC\u2019s statement<\/a> opposing President Donald Trump\u2019s most recent travel ban.<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted\u00a0writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/03\/08\/etiquette-advice-for-students-facing-questions-about-college\/mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly four in 10 colleges have seen drops in applications from international students, and recruitment officials report that families are exhibiting \u201ca great deal of concern\u201d about how their students will be treated in the US, according to early findings from a recent survey of more than 250 US colleges and universities.
