Last year the hosts of <em>Awesome Etiquette<\/em> \u2014 a podcast produced by American Public Media \u2014 discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/awesome-etiquette-deflecting-questions-about-your-college-application#stream\/0\">polite ways to deflect overly intrusive college admission questions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The topic was raised by high school senior Amy Mercedes, who asked show hosts Lizzie Post and Daniel Post Senning how she should respond to questions from adults and peers about her college list, grade point average, college essay, and SAT scores.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure people don\u2019t mean to be nosy, but how should I balance answering such personal questions while maintaining my privacy,\u201d Mercedes asked. \u201cIs there a polite way to divert these well-intentioned inquires?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Post and Senning \u2014 great-great grandchildren of manners maven Emily Post \u2014 suggest students formulate a polite \u201cbrush-off answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake sure your brush-off answer is gentle enough that people don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re insulting them,\u201d the duo noted. \u201cYou could say something like, \u2018You know, it\u2019s so off my mind right now and I\u2019m so grateful for a break from thinking about it tonight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another tactic: Flip the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk someone how they approached their college application and decision about where to go to school,\u201d Post and Senning suggest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/digital.vpr.net\/post\/awesome-etiquette-deflecting-questions-about-your-college-application#stream\/0\">Read the full advice column<\/a> and check out<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacfairs.org\/learn\/decide\/determining-the-right-fit-college\/\"> NACAC\u2019s tips for selecting a college<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted<\/em> writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at <a href=\"mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s note: A version of this post was first published on Admitted in March 2016.
