Others live with grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s no surprise that questions abound each year as students determine how to record parental tax information on the <a href=\"https:\/\/fafsa.gov\/\">FAFSA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An infographic from the US Department of Education \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/sites\/default\/files\/who-is-my-parent.png\">Who\u2019s My Parent When I Fill Out the FAFSA<\/a> \u2014 can help students (and counselors) through the application process.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The flow chart was shared in <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ed.gov\/2015\/12\/guide-reporting-parent-info-on-fafsa\/\">a post on the department\u2019s <em>Homeroom<\/em> blog<\/a>. Authors Tara Marini and Cindy Forbes Cameron \u2014 who work in the Federal Student Aid office \u2014 also highlighted some general advice for students.<\/p>\n<p>Their guidelines for reporting parent information on the FAFSA include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 If your parents are living and legally married to each other, answer the questions about both of them.<br \/>\n\u2022 If your parents are living together and are not married, answer the questions about both of them.<br \/>\n\u2022 If your parents are divorced or separated and don\u2019t live together, answer the questions about the parent with whom you lived more during the past 12 months. If you lived the same amount of time with each parent, give answers about the parent who provided more financial support during the past 12 months or during the most recent 12 months that you actually received support from a parent.<br \/>\n\u2022 If you have a stepparent who is married to the legal parent whose information you\u2019re reporting, you must provide information about that stepparent as well.<\/p>\n<p>Students must complete a FAFSA to be considered for federal financial aid.
