{"id":452,"date":"2017-01-24T13:00:46","date_gmt":"2017-01-24T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=452"},"modified":"2017-01-24T13:13:07","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T18:13:07","slug":"minnesota-seeks-to-curb-summer-melt-with-text-messaging-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/01\/24\/minnesota-seeks-to-curb-summer-melt-with-text-messaging-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Seeks to Curb Summer Melt with Text Messages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HVqDParE1PA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota Office of Higher Education has teamed up with a group of teens to promote Summer Nudging \u2014 a program that uses text messages to help high schoolers successfully navigate the transition to college.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the High School for Recording Arts \u2014 a charter school located in St. Paul, Minnesota \u2014 recently created a music video to promote the free service.<\/p>\n<p>Teens who sign up receive weekly text messages reminding them when key deadlines are approaching.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cOne in five college-bound students fail to enroll in the fall, oftentimes because they aren\u2019t aware of the steps they need to take or lack a support system,\u201d program coordinator Kat Klima <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohe.state.mn.us\/mPg.cfm?pageID=2224\">said in a press release<\/a>. \u201cThe gentle reminders sent out through the nudging program help them avoid missing deadlines and provide practical advice on things such as completing financial aid forms and preparing for college orientation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Summer Nudging, launched as a pilot program in 2013, reached over 1,800 Minnesota students in 2016. Klima hopes to get more than 5,000 students to sign up for the program this year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to weekly \u201cnudges,\u201d students can text questions about college admission and enrollment to program staff.
