They also don\u2019t come as a surprise to people working in the college admission profession.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Lollardfish\/status\/1116064624917581825\">media coverage<\/a> and parent perceptions can make it seem as though a handful of selective universities are the norm, most US colleges and universities admit a majority of students who apply.<\/p>\n<p>NACAC\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/news--publications\/publications\/state-of-college-admission\/\">State of College Admission report<\/a><\/em> has proclaimed this for years, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/04\/09\/a-majority-of-u-s-colleges-admit-most-students-who-apply\/\">new study from Pew Research Center<\/a> is backing it up and pushing its findings into the mainstream.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Pew looked at 1,364 four-year colleges and universities. Of those, just 17 admitted fewer than 10 percent of their total applicant pool. Another 29 schools admitted between 10 percent and 20 percent of applicants.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, 53.3 percent of the colleges and universities included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/04\/09\/a-majority-of-u-s-colleges-admit-most-students-who-apply\/\">in the study<\/a> admitted at least two-thirds of all applicants.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Atlantic<\/em> ran their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2019\/04\/harvard-uchicago-elite-colleges-are-anomaly\/586627\/\">own similar study.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of the 10.8 million undergraduates enrolled in the country\u2019s more than 2,500 four-year universities in the fall of 2017, more than 80 percent attended schools that accept more than half their applicants.<\/p>\n<p>Only about 3 percent of undergraduates were enrolled at a four-year university that accepts fewer than a quarter of undergraduate applicants and just 0.8 percent of undergraduates were attending a university that accepts fewer than one in 10 applicants, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2019\/04\/harvard-uchicago-elite-colleges-are-anomaly\/586627\/\">The Atlantic found.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the recent bribery scandal, these numbers \u2013 and the media attention on them &#8212; are more important than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe if we stop thinking about \u201ccollege admission\u201d as \u201chow to get into exclusive schools,\u201d and start recognizing how many institutions are really serving the public good, the process of applying doesn\u2019t have to be as traumatic and stressful.<\/p>\n<p>And if we are truly concerned about highly-selective colleges, let\u2019s start a discussion about that.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ashley Dobson is NACAC\u2019s senior communications manager for content and social media.
