{"id":3274,"date":"2019-06-17T08:00:48","date_gmt":"2019-06-17T12:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=3274"},"modified":"2019-05-29T13:17:33","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T17:17:33","slug":"gender-inclusivity-slowly-improving-on-campuses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2019\/06\/17\/gender-inclusivity-slowly-improving-on-campuses\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender Inclusivity Slowly Improving on Campuses"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3275\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3275\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/pronoun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/pronoun.jpg 724w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/pronoun-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Colleges and universities are making strides in gender inclusivity, but there is still a lot of work to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago, the University of Vermont became the first school in the US to allow students to self-identify their pronouns and to include it in their student data.<\/p>\n<p>Now, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campuspride.org\/tpc\/records\/\">the Campus Pride Trans Policy Clearinghouse,<\/a> 255 colleges enable students to use a chosen first name, instead of their legal name, on campus records and documents; 60 colleges enable students to change the gender on their campus records without evidence of medical intervention; and 19 colleges enable students to indicate the pronouns they use for themselves on course rosters.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Jeane Robles, a student at the University of Vermont, said that these options mean a lot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just having the option to do that makes me feel like I can exist here,&#8221; Robles, a graduate student whose pronouns are they\/them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/03\/21\/693953037\/i-can-exist-here-on-gender-identity-some-colleges-are-opening-up\">told NPR<\/a>. Without these options, &#8220;I [wouldn&#8217;t] be able to fully be present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Z Nicolazzo, a professor at the University of Arizona, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/03\/21\/693953037\/i-can-exist-here-on-gender-identity-some-colleges-are-opening-up\">told NPR<\/a> that these policies need to come with a new mindset for higher education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really worry that it becomes almost like a checkbox kind of way of thinking about diversity and equity work,&#8221; Nicolazzo, whose pronouns are she\/her or ze\/hir, said.<\/p>\n<p>She said higher education still tends to look at gender as a binary concept.
