But could it also serve as a career-readiness program?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naspa.org\/images\/uploads\/main\/Employing_Student_Success_FINAL_DOWNLOAD.pdf\">A new\u00a0report<\/a>\u00a0from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) gives recommendations for how colleges can rethink work-study programs to more intentionally prepare students for the \u201creal world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs time and resource constraints prevent students from engaging in unpaid co-curricular activities, on-campus employment is well positioned to serve as a paid learning and engagement opportunity that will improve student retention and connection to the institution,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naspa.org\/images\/uploads\/main\/Employing_Student_Success_FINAL_DOWNLOAD.pdf\">the report states.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their suggestions include creating a hiring system that would better mimic professional work opportunities, helping students document and evaluate their on-campus work experiences, and giving supervisors guidelines and support to offer professional development opportunities for students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutions have an opportunity to alleviate the concerns that many students have when faced with choosing between work and school,\u201d the report states. \u201cOn-campus employment can help students meet their financial demands and also prepare them to succeed in a career after graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Trump\u2019s proposed 2020 budget would reduce funding for the Federal Work-Study program. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/news--publications\/newsroom\/press-releases\/nacac-opposes-trump-2020-budget-proposal\/\">NACAC opposes<\/a> these cuts.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ashley Dobson is NACAC\u2019s senior communications manager for content and social media.
