{"id":320,"date":"2016-12-07T15:00:32","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T20:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=320"},"modified":"2017-03-23T08:59:04","modified_gmt":"2017-03-23T12:59:04","slug":"report-counselors-positively-impact-college-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2016\/12\/07\/report-counselors-positively-impact-college-access\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: Counselors Positively Impact College Access"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_321\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-321\" style=\"width: 849px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-321\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/collegeopenings.jpg\" alt=\"iStock\" width=\"849\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/collegeopenings.jpg 849w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/collegeopenings-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/collegeopenings-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students who meet one-on-one with a school counselor are significantly more likely to attend college and apply for federal financial aid, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/news--publications\/Research\/postsecondaryattendance\/\">a new study<\/a> released today by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC).<\/p>\n<p>The findings, culled from nationally representative data, are the first to demonstrate that school counselors have a positive impact on student outcomes that is both quantifiable and statistically significant.<\/p>\n<p>NACAC\u2019s latest research report \u2014 <em>How Can High School Counseling Shape Students\u2019 Postsecondary Attendance?<\/em> \u2014 shows that 12th graders who talked about their future plans with a school counselor were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6.8 times more likely to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).<\/li>\n<li>3.2 times more likely to attend college.<\/li>\n<li>Two times more likely to attend a bachelor&#8217;s degree program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new findings offer proof of what educators have long known \u2014 school counselors play a critical role in encouraging students to plan for the future and navigate the college application process,\u201d said NACAC CEO Joyce Smith. \u201cAs the country looks for ways to boost college-going rates, NACAC\u2019s research proves that investing in school counselors is a powerful strategy to encourage equal access to postsecondary education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report \u2014 which draws on data from the US Department of Education\u2019s <em>High School Longitudinal Study \u2014<\/em> also underscores the importance of ensuring school counselors have adequate time to help their students plan for college.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2015 NACAC study, 54 percent of counselors reported that their counseling department spent less than 20 percent of its time on college readiness, selection, and applications.
