The tribal college student experience is unique, and its value can often be overlooked.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0new report<\/a>\u00a0from the Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCSSE) explores Native student experiences at tribal colleges and the challenges these students can face in earning a college degree.<\/p>\n

\u201cTribal colleges are often overlooked in the field of higher education, but they shouldn\u2019t be. They are creating important opportunities for their students,\u201d Evelyn Waiwaiole, executive director of CCSSE, said in a news release.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The report, \u201cPreserving Culture and Planning for the Future: An Exploration of Student Experiences at Tribal Colleges,\u201d highlighted the many ways Native American students attending tribal colleges differ from Native American students at other colleges.<\/p>\n

Tribal college students are more likely to be enrolled full-time and to be 25 years or older. They are also more likely to be female, according to the report.<\/a><\/p>\n

Tribal college students were also more likely to take advantage of tutoring services and skill labs, to participate in service-learning activities, and to prepare multiple drafts of papers.<\/p>\n

However, tribal college students often face challenges that could impact their ability to earn a degree.<\/p>\n

Forty-nine percent of students said that a lack of reliable transportation could cause them to withdraw, and 25 percent reported food insecurity.<\/p>\n

\u201cTribal colleges may be the only option many of these students have for higher education. Therefore, the work they are doing and the challenges their students encounter deserve continued exploration and attention,\u201d said Waiwaiole.<\/p>\n
