{"id":3022,"date":"2019-02-25T08:00:01","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T13:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=3022"},"modified":"2019-02-12T10:56:29","modified_gmt":"2019-02-12T15:56:29","slug":"nacac-members-offer-advice-on-appealing-a-college-rejection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2019\/02\/25\/nacac-members-offer-advice-on-appealing-a-college-rejection\/","title":{"rendered":"NACAC Members Offer Advice on Appealing a College Rejection"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3023\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3023\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/appeal-letter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/appeal-letter.jpg 724w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/appeal-letter-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A rejection from your dream college does not always mark the end of the road with that school.<\/p>\n<p>Appealing the college\u2019s decision can be an option, though one that typically only results in a few overturned rejections each year.<\/p>\n<p>Every school has its own procedure for an appeal process or clearly denotes that all admission decisions are final.<\/p>\n<p>Though the odds are slim for a successful appeal, NACAC members Colleen Ganjian, Eric Nichols, and Parke Muth spoke to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/how-to-appeal-college-rejection\">Teen Vogue<\/a><\/em> and offered advice to students looking to give it one more shot.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Muth, an independent educational consultant, reminded students that their appeal should be based on facts and should focus on what they bring to the table, not use the appeal as an excuse to let out their frustration at the initial decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents should not say that the\u00a0admission office\u00a0has made a mistake unless it is factual information,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/story\/how-to-appeal-college-rejection\">Muth told <em>Teen Vogue<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIn other words, a student who essentially says, \u2018You did not do a good job\u2019 will not convince an admission office to change a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nichols, the vice president for enrollment and dean of admission at Saint Anselm College (NH), wants to make sure it is actually the students taking on the appeal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember, it is your work that is being reviewed in the admission process, not your parents\u2019, so we\u2019d rather hear directly from you,\u201d Nichols said. \u201cTo put this in perspective, last year we had over 200 merit award appeals. There was only one that came directly from a student. The rest came from parents. I think it goes without saying that the one student who wrote [her] own appeal stood out to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An appeal is not the only way to get into your dream school after a rejection.
