In most cases, LGBTQ students are not protected by supportive and inclusive school policies.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glsen.org\/article\/state-snapshots-national-school-climate-survey\/#statesnapshots\">The State Snapshots report<\/a> examines the experiences of LGBTQ middle and high school students across 41 states and Puerto Rico. Using data from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glsen.org\/article\/2017-national-school-climate-survey-1\">2017 National School Climate Survey<\/a>, this state-by-state breakdown includes statistics that reveal the regularity of LGBTQ students hearing biased language, experiencing harassment and\/or discrimination, and having access to in-school resources or support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis state-specific data allows advocates, educators, administrators, and policymakers, among others, to evaluate school climate in their individual state, and to advocate for safer and more inclusive school environments for LGBTQ students across the nation, including LGBTQ-supportive school policies, LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum, and more,\u201d GLSEN stated.<\/p>\n<p>One of NACAC\u2019s fundamental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/globalassets\/documents\/advocacy-and-ethics\/statement-of-principles-of-good-practice\/nacacs-code-of-ethics--professional-practices.pdf\">core values<\/a> is a commitment \u201cto eliminating from the education system bias based on race, ethnicity, creed, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, political affiliation, national origin, or disability.\u201d NACAC <a href=\"https:\/\/cqrcengage.com\/nacac\/file\/ERpbOo7Gi7j\/AntiDiscrimination2019.pdf\">opposes<\/a> any policies that allow for discrimination in any form.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glsen.org\/article\/state-snapshots-national-school-climate-survey\/#statesnapshots\">how your state measures up<\/a> and consider GLSEN\u2019s recommendations for creating school environments that better support and include LGBTQ students.<\/p>\n<p><em>Julie Kirk is NACAC\u2019s government relations manager.
