So why aren\u2019t vets found on the campuses of the most selective schools in the US?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Out of about 1 million veterans and their family members enrolled in higher education under the GI Bill, just 844 veterans are enrolled in the nation\u2019s 36 most selective schools.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cIn leadership and life, symbolism counts. Intentional or not, the low numbers of veterans signals to all of higher ed that these students do not matter,\u201d community college writing professor Wick Sloane <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/at-top-colleges-that-train-americas-elite-veterans-are-an-almost-invisible-minority\/\">told <em>The Hechinger Report<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Even when these schools try to reach veterans, application criteria and a lack of understanding about the military system and experience works against many students.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>For example, Princeton University (NJ) previously didn\u2019t allow students who had taken any college courses after high school to apply. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThat was a huge penalty to military veterans,\u201d Elizabeth Colagiuri, the deputy dean at Princeton and a Navy veteran herself, <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/at-top-colleges-that-train-americas-elite-veterans-are-an-almost-invisible-minority\/\">told <em>Hechinger<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Princeton rescinded this restriction in 2017 and ended up admitting five veterans as freshmen in the following year\u2019s class.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/at-top-colleges-that-train-americas-elite-veterans-are-an-almost-invisible-minority\/\">the full article<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/globalassets\/documents\/knowledge-center\/transfer\/five-ways-to-support-veteran-transfer-students-final.pdf\">explore five ideas from NACAC<\/a> for supporting veteran transfer students.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>Ashley Dobson is NACAC\u2019s communications manager for content and social media.
