You really should watch what you post.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a common refrain from parents and teachers throughout the college admission process, but are admission officers actually checking social media?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/press\/2018\/11\/27\/kaplan-test-prep-survey-social-media-checks-by-college-admissions-officers-decline-due-to-savvier-applicants-and-shifting-attitudes\/\">A new survey by Kaplan Test Prep<\/a> found that just 25 percent of college admission officers check the social media accounts of prospective students, down from a high of 40 percent in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>There also seems to be a shift in admission officers\u2019 attitudes about checking social media. About 57 percent of survey respondents said social media is \u201cfair game\u201d in determining admission, a drop from 68 percent in the 2017 survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless it\u2019s a matter of checking on something that might be a hate crime or endangering other people, then it becomes a safety issue, but otherwise it\u2019s a privacy issue,\u201d one respondent told Kaplan.<\/p>\n<p>This issue came to a head in 2017 when at least 10 students had their admission offers <a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/06\/14\/good-or-bad-meme-groups-now-play-a-larger-role-in-college-admission\/\">rescinded by Harvard University<\/a> due to sexually explicit and racist memes they posted in a private Facebook group chat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnline expression is really just a matter of common sense: One should never assume that pictures, posts, comments, etc. are anonymous, private, or will just \u201cgo away;\u201d and (especially for prospective students or job applicants) don\u2019t put anything out there that you wouldn\u2019t want an admission committee or prospective employer to see,\u201d Timothy Brunold, a NACAC member and USC\u2019s dean of admission, <a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/06\/14\/good-or-bad-meme-groups-now-play-a-larger-role-in-college-admission\/\">told NACAC last year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that all people have a right to express themselves, but that right comes with responsibilities and an implicit willingness to accept the potential consequences that might result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems most students are ready and willing to accept these consequences.
