An academic in Australia has one major piece of advice for students before they head to university: Take a gap year.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool might have prepared students intellectually for a tertiary education, but there is lots school can\u2019t prepare you for \u2014 and that\u2019s how to deal with real people in the real world,\u201d Jenna Price, who works at the University of Technology in Sydney, wrote in The Sydney Morning-Herald.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Though a gap year alone won\u2019t turn a C-student into an A-student, she said there is a significant difference in the overall performance of students who\u2019ve taken a break from formal education.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI can always tell the students who\u2019ve had a gap year. They don\u2019t burst into tears over marks. They don\u2019t get cranky when you critique their work,\u201d Price wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have a resilience born from working at the checkout in the local supermarket where customers may behave deplorably and, if they have the economic advantage necessary to travel, they also have the resilience born from dealing with the travel disasters that happen when Mum and Dad can\u2019t rescue you anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
