Johnson and William Stixrud, who together penned <em>The Self-Driven Child<\/em>, shared tips in a recent article published by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One takeaway for moms and dads: Resist the urge to micromanage.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way for parents to help kids succeed during their college search is for them to act less like directors and more like consultants\u2014advising, but not controlling,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-colleges\/articles\/2018-09-14\/how-to-help-your-child-navigate-the-college-search\">Johnson and Stixrud write<\/a>. \u201cAfter all, if a teen can\u2019t handle being in control of the admissions process, then she will likely struggle when navigating college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2329\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild-768x1159.jpg 768w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/SelfDrivenChild.jpg 1696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Putting students in charge of the college search presents an opportunity for growth, they note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoosing a school is a process in which kids can really learn to better understand themselves \u2013 and get valuable practice in making important decisions on their own,\u201d Johnson and Stixrud write. \u201cAs a parent, you send a powerful message when you let your child know you trust him to make good choices. It encourages him to think honestly about himself and to seek advice from other knowledgeable people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, whose book was the subject of our <a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2018\/09\/13\/nacacreads-author-learning-comes-through-trial-and-error\/\">September #NACACreads chat<\/a>, has also created a to-do list to help students stay on track throughout their high school career.
