A portion of that is used to pay students a nontaxable hourly wage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students\u2019 earnings can be used for general living expenses as well as to help contribute to the cost of attendance,\u201d Roelofs wrote in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2016\/10\/04\/how-college-work-programs-benefit-both-student-and-institution-essay\"> <strong>a 2016 essay published by <em>Inside Higher Education<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although no students are charged tuition at Berea, students and their families are expected to pay \u201cfees and living expenses\u201d as determined by the FAFSA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe compensation earned through the work program thus helps to minimize debt for our students,\u201d Roelofs noted in his piece. \u201cAbout a third of our students graduate entirely debt-free, with the rest borrowing an average of less than $7,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also learn job skills and develop \u201cpride, confidence and respect for all manner of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose bonds develop between students and labor supervisors, whether faculty or staff, thus allowing for enhanced mentorship,\u201d Roelofs wrote. \u201cMany alumni credit their work experiences as having been crucial to acquiring work skills, getting first jobs and advancing professionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2016\/10\/04\/how-college-work-programs-benefit-both-student-and-institution-essay\">Read Roelofs\u2019 full essay<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/learning\/communities\/Admitted\/Lists\/Posts\/Post.aspx?ID=894\"><strong>learn more about the value of work<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted<\/em> <em>writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/learning\/communities\/Admitted\/default.aspx\"><strong>mstegmeir@nacacnet.org<\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor\u2019s note: A version of this post was originally published on Admitted in October 2016.\u00a0It\u2019s being republished as part of NACAC\u2019s Best of the Blog series.
