{"id":2294,"date":"2018-07-13T08:36:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T12:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=2294"},"modified":"2018-07-13T08:36:48","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T12:36:48","slug":"low-income-families-play-a-powerful-role-in-the-success-of-their-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2018\/07\/13\/low-income-families-play-a-powerful-role-in-the-success-of-their-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Low-Income Families Play a Powerful Role in the Success of Their Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2295\" style=\"width: 751px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/happyfam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2295\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/happyfam.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"751\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/happyfam.jpg 751w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/happyfam-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Financial assistance is crucial to the academic success of low-income college students, but according to new research, family support may be even more influential.<\/p>\n<p>A study published recently in <em>Research in Higher Education<\/em> showed that students with a strong familial cheering section did better at navigating college life and classes.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents who reported receiving more emotional support from their families were 19 percent more likely to have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, 19 percent more likely to accumulate at least 24 credits during their first year, and 24 percent more likely to finish a second year of college,\u201d according to an <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2018\/07\/11\/emotional-support-families-makes-difference-low-income-students\">article<\/a> about the study. \u201cFinancial support from their families was unrelated to all three of those outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Low-income students who cited strong emotional support systems were also more likely to tell researchers they felt like they belonged on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily support is related to how much kids study, how they engage with faculty, whether or not they belong,\u201d researcher Josipa Roksa told <em>Inside Higher Ed<\/em>. \u201cThose things that we hold dear in higher education as indications of academic and social engagement and that we usually try to address institutionally are actually related to parental support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper is based on results of a survey of 728 first-year students at eight different four-year colleges in Wisconsin.
