And \u201csamplers\u201d develop one-on-one relationships with individuals who don\u2019t necessarily know one another.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u00a0Her research \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2016\/11\/02\/499351266\/how-college-friendships-may-affect-student-success\">recently covered by NPR<\/a> \u2014 found that each pattern came with positive, as well as negative, associations.<\/p>\n<p>Samplers, for example, are typically successful in the classroom, but are more likely to report feeling lonely. Compartmentalizers run the risk of being spread too thin socially. And peers seem to play an oversized role in determining the academic success of tight-knitters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sample size is too small to be definitive about cause, but McCabe found that half the tight-knitters seemed to be part of groups that \u2018dragged them down\u2019 academically,\u201d NPR reported. \u201cThe other half performed above average, seemingly part of groups that \u2018dragged each other up.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCabe writes about the findings in her recently released book, <a href=\"http:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/C\/bo24731955.html\"><em>Connecting in College: How Friendship Networks Matter for Academics and Social Success<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at <a href=\"mailto:mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The friendships freshmen form can influence their academic success and emotional well-being, new research suggests.
