The university, a NACAC member institution, holds a week-long residential <a href=\"http:\/\/Summer Camp Helps Special Needs Students Prepare for College\">summer camp<\/a> to help high school juniors and seniors get ready for college. 2018 marks the 10th year it has offered the camp.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest stressors for people with Asperger\u2019s is uncertainty brought on by social expectations,\u201d according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadertelegram.com\/News\/Front-Page\/2016\/04\/11\/Camp-helps-students-prepare-for-college(copy).html\">2016 article<\/a> about the program published by the <em>Eau Claire Leader-Telegram<\/em>. \u201cTo help build their confidence, campers receive daily instruction and practice such skills as relating to a roommate, communicating effectively with professors, and working in groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Autism Society, children with autism are frequently viewed \u201cas aloof and uninterested in others.\u201d Individuals with Asperger\u2019s \u201cusually want to fit in\u2026but often they don\u2019t know how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camp coordinator Kay Hagedorn told the <em>Leader-Telegram<\/em> that the experience of living on a college campus helps build participants\u2019 comfort and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to learning how to navigate campus facilities, students attend seminars on time management and meet with professors in their field of interest.<\/p>\n<p>The experiences help tame anxieties, and get students excited about college, Hagedorn told the <em>Leader-Telegram.<\/em> Past campers have gone on to graduate from UW-Eau Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCampers see the successful completion of a degree and a future career as real possibilities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leadertelegram.com\/News\/Front-Page\/2016\/04\/11\/Camp-helps-students-prepare-for-college(copy).html\">Read more about the camp<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at <a href=\"mailto:mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adjusting to campus life can be tough for any student.
