Experts from NACAC and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) addressed that question today during a Facebook Live Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent outcomes are better with the 250-to-1 ratio,\u201d Jill Cook, ASCA\u2019s assistant director noted during the chat. \u201cAttendance is better, achievement is better, graduation rates (are better).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Even discipline referrals decrease as students gain greater access to a school counselor, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdeally, what we need to push for at all levels (K-12) is that 250-to-1 ratio,\u201d Cook said, gaining nods of approval from NACAC\u2019s David Hawkins and Crystal Newby, who also were featured in the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that students who meet one-on-one with a school counselor are significantly more likely to attend college and apply for federal financial aid. Yet NACAC\u2019s most recent report \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/globalassets\/documents\/publications\/research\/ratioreportdr3.pdf\">a state-by-state look at student-to-counselor ratios<\/a> released in cooperation with ASCA \u2014 showed that just three states meet the recommended ratio.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins, Newby, and Cook encouraged viewers to advocate on the state, federal, and local levels to increase student access to school counselors. All voices \u2014 including those of admission professionals at colleges and universities\u2014 are needed to lend support to this important cause, said Hawkins,\u00a0\u00a0who serves as NACAC&#8217;s executive director for educational content and policy.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nacacnet.org\/news--publications\/Research\/postsecondaryattendance\/\">2016 NACAC report<\/a>\u00a0showed that 12th graders who talked about their future plans with a school counselor were nearly seven times more likely to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid and three times more likely to attend college.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Admission officers have a role here,\u201d Hawkins said. \u201cIf they can articulate for school leaders that this is what produces change and this is what we need from the higher ed side, that can help move the ball down the field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at\u00a0<\/em><a style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2018\/03\/06\/learn-more-about-student-activism-and-the-admission-process\/mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\"><em>mstegmeir@nacacnet.org<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ideal student-to-counselor ratio is 250-to-1, yet the average school counselor currently serves a caseload that is nearly twice that size.
