And snakes. And turtles. And rabbits. And pretty much any other pet you can think of under 40 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Lyon College in Arkansas announced in January that it would join a small number of colleges that allow students to bring pets with them to live on campus.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed='true' href='https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/eckerdcollege\/albums\/72157680571041304' title='Pet Graduation 2017 by Eckerd College, on Flickr'><img src='https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4164\/34232851790_868cd13e30_z.jpg' width='800' height='600' alt='Eckerd College Pet Commencement 2017'><\/a><script async src='https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js' charset='utf-8'><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Lyon officials think the move will be an enrollment draw and they are going all in.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to opening a pet-friendly residence hall, the college will offer obedience classes, a fenced-in dog park, and a new coffee shop that will welcome both students and pets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents expect more today,\u201d Eric Bork, Lyon\u2019s associate vice president of marketing and communications, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyon.edu\/Lyon-college-news\/posts\/lyon-college-will-open-states-only-pet-friendly-residence-hall-in-fall-2018\">a news release<\/a>. \u201cFor many students, their pet is their closest companion. If they want to share their college experience with their best friend, of course we want to help make that possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though it isn\u2019t fully mainstream \u2014 at least not yet \u2014 Lyon is not alone in its pet-friendly offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Lees-McRae College in North Carolina not only offers pet-friendly on-campus housing options, it also encourages professors to incorporate pets into their lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Students at Lees-McRae told <em>College Magazine<\/em> that the school\u2019s pet policy influenced their decision to attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dog is helping\u00a0me become a responsible adult, too\u2014I now have a budget plan, so that I can afford to buy his (and my) essentials,\u201d junior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegemagazine.com\/cms-top-ten-campuses-dog-lovers\/\">Melissa Hooper told the magazine<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s great at meeting new people, sparks new conversations, and helps professors and fellow students feel more comfortable in classroom settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eckerd College in Florida is known for pioneering the pet-friendly campus trend.<\/p>\n<p>The school has permitted students to bring pets for several decades and even holds an annual graduation ceremony for the pets of graduating students.<\/p>\n<p>Pet graduates receive a certificate, an Eckerd College ID tag, and a cap-and-gown photo shoot with their owner and the college president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis really is one of my favorite events at Eckerd College,\u201d Donald Eastman, the college\u2019s president, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/two-dozen-companions-get-their-due-at-pet-graduation\/\">in a news release<\/a>. \u201c[This event] tells you more about what sort of place this is than any other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Ashley Dobson is NACAC\u2019s communications manager for content and social media.
