Previously, ACT test-takers were allotted only five free reports, with each additional transmission costing $13.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new College Board policy \u2014 which goes into effect next spring \u2014 low-income students who take the SAT will be able to send unlimited score reports to colleges. Previously, low-income SAT test-takers were allotted up to eight free score reports, with additional transmissions costing $12 each.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy lifting the limit (on free score reports), both ACT and the College Board said that they hoped low-income students might be encouraged to apply to more colleges than they have in the past,\u201d according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/quicktakes\/2017\/12\/14\/limits-end-fee-waivers-test-reports\">Inside Higher Ed<\/a><\/em>. \u201cApplying to more colleges can be particularly important for low-income students so they can compare aid packages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move comes at a time when a growing number of colleges have begun allowing students to <a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/11\/08\/list-shows-where-students-can-self-report-test-scores\/\">self-report scores<\/a> as part of an effort to make the college application process more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>In that context, perhaps the decision by ACT and SAT to increase the number of free score reports was \u201cinevitable,\u201d Eric Hoover, a reporter at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/ACTCollege-Board-to-Offer\/242048\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a><\/em>, noted in a recent article.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded: \u201cStill, among admissions officials and college counselors, the immediate response to Wednesday\u2019s twin announcements could be summed up in a word rarely associated with standardized tests: Cool!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New policies unveiled this week by ACT and The College Board will reduce the fees low-income students encounter in the college admission process.
