{"id":1612,"date":"2017-11-13T09:39:17","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T14:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=1612"},"modified":"2017-11-13T14:25:58","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T19:25:58","slug":"report-international-student-enrollment-shows-signs-of-flattening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/11\/13\/report-international-student-enrollment-shows-signs-of-flattening\/","title":{"rendered":"Report: International Student Enrollment Shows Signs of Flattening"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1613\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/opendoorsphotoillustration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1613\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/opendoorsphotoillustration.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/opendoorsphotoillustration.jpg 724w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/opendoorsphotoillustration-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The number of international students studying at US colleges and universities hit an all-time high of 1.08 million during the 2016-17 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>But data captured in the most recent <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/opendoors\">Open Doors <\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/opendoors\">report<\/a> suggests that those numbers are beginning to flatten after more than a decade of continued growth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the overall number of international students studying in the United States has increased, the number of new international students \u2014 those enrolled at a US institution for the first time in fall 2016, declined by nearly 10,000 students to about 291,000, a 3 percent decrease from the previous year,\u201d according to the report, which is published annually by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/\">Institute of International Education<\/a>. \u201cThis is the first time that these numbers have declined in the 12 years since <em>Open Doors<\/em> has reported new enrollments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decrease can be traced to a variety of factors, including \u201ca mix of global and local economic conditions, and in some cases expanded higher education opportunities at home and declining populations,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/OpenDoors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1614 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/OpenDoors-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/OpenDoors-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/OpenDoors.jpg 626w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a>\u201cAs more countries become active hosts of international students and implement national strategies to attract them, the competition for top global talent in higher education and the workforce will only intensify,\u201d IIE President Allan E. Goodman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/Why-IIE\/Announcements\/2017-11-13-Open-Doors-Data\">said in a press release.<\/a> \u201c\u2026(I)t is critical for US institutions to set strategic goals and be proactive in reaching out to students and families in a wide range of countries in the coming year, and for the United States to keep its academic doors open to students from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other top findings from this year\u2019s report include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China and India remain the leading countries of origin, with individuals from the two countries accounting for roughly half of all international students studying in the states.<\/li>\n<li>International students brought nearly $39 billion to the US economy in 2016, according to the US Department of Commerce.<\/li>\n<li>American students are also increasingly seeking international education opportunities. More than 325,300 US students studied abroad for academic credit in 2015-16.
