It\u2019s being republished as part of NACAC\u2019s Best of the Blog series.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All hail the humble highlighter.<\/p>\n<p>Neon markers are a vital part of Dana Lambert\u2019s efforts to help students make the most of their National College Fair experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make them come in with a plan,\u201d said Lambert, a counselor at West Milford Township High School in New Jersey. \u201cOnce the list of fair exhibitors comes out, we have them sit down and highlight the schools and the tables that they want to stop at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The strategy gives students \u201ca sense of ownership\u201d in the college research process, said Lambert, who serves on the NACAC committee overseeing the New Jersey National College Fair.<\/p>\n<p>She offers these helpful hints for counselors preparing their students for National College Fairs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule student meetings:<\/strong> At Lambert\u2019s school, each junior \u2014 highlighter in hand \u2014 talks with a counselor prior to the fair. \u201cIt helps get them in the right mindset, and we use it as a way to make sure they are prepared to make the most out of the fair,\u201d Lambert said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Promote workshops, counseling center:<\/strong> National College Fairs include workshop on various topics, including financial aid and student athlete eligibility.
