The state has required teens to take a college entrance exam since 2007.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the policy increased the probability that students would enroll in college by about 2 percent,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=ed+week+and+act+hyman&amp;oq=ed+week+and+act+hyman&amp;gs_l=psy-ab.3...10989.12600.0.12797.12.10.2.0.0.0.155.903.6j4.10.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..2.8.531...0i22i30k1j0i22i10i30k1j33i160k1j33i22i29i30k1j33i21k1.YZVw-8PKChQ\">according to an <em>Education Week<\/em> article about the new research<\/a>. \u201cStudents at schools with higher poverty rates increased their college enrollment rates by 6 percent, and those students who had a low to middling probability of taking the ACT before the policy took effect saw their rates improve by 5 percent afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Researcher Joshua Hyman said the study shows that the ACT and SAT serve as \u201ca gateway to four-year colleges,\u201d especially for students who may not otherwise consider postsecondary education a possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI show that for every ten poor students taking a college entrance exam and scoring college-ready, there are an additional five poor students who do not take the test but who would score college-ready if they did,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/us\/2017\/07\/10\/when-states-pay-for-the-sat-or-act-more-poor-students-go-to-college\/\">Hyman told <em>Chalkbeat<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the findings, the study notes that providing free access to college admission exams is \u201cfar from a cure-all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere remains a large supply of disadvantaged students who are high-achieving and not on the path to enrolling at a four-year college,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mitpressjournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1162\/EDFP_a_00206\">the study notes<\/a>. \u201cResearchers and policy makers are still faced with the important question of which policies can further stem the tide of rising inequality in educational attainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Admitted writer\/editor Mary Stegmeir welcomes additional comments and story ideas at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/07\/25\/campus-visit-tips-for-moms-and-dads\/mstegmeir@nacacnet.org\">mstegmeir@nacacnet.org.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College enrollment rates increase when high schools cover the cost of college entrance exams, new research suggests.
