A growing number of colleges are using summer reading assignments to introduce incoming freshmen to the new ideas and topics they\u2019ll encounter in their undergraduate courses, according to reports from The New York Times<\/em> and Inside Higher Ed<\/em>.<\/p>\n

About 40 percent of college orientations include discussion of a common reading assignment,\u00a0 the Times <\/em>reported last month.<\/a><\/p>\n

“The books are almost always tied to current events and often make strong statements on issues like immigration, race, and the perils of technology,” the article noted.<\/p>\n

Two popular choices this summer include Just Mercy<\/em>, Bryan Stevenson\u2019s memoir about prison reform, and Between the World and Me, <\/em>Ta-Nehisi Coates\u2019 exploration of race in America, according to the Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

J.D. Vance\u2019s Hillbilly Elegy<\/em> \u2014 an autobiographical look a rural poverty \u2014 is another popular read in a field dominated by titles that address racial or social issues.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough it might be easy to correlate that trend with the presidential election \u2014 and the heightened racial and social tensions seen during and since \u2014 books focusing on those areas have been popular for a few years now,\u201d Inside Higher Ed<\/a><\/em> noted in a recent article.<\/p>\n

Most of the titles assigned by colleges this year are contemporary works of fiction or nonfiction. A few classics round out the list, according to the Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmong universities that do assign books from the Western canon, a popular choice is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein<\/em>, one of a number of selections that warn students that there can be a dark side to invention and technology,” the Times<\/em> reported. “Freshmen at Gustavus Adolphus College, a Lutheran-affiliated school in Minnesota, are among those reading the novel this summer. In the fall, they will participate in a campuswide exploration of the ethical questions brought up by bioengineering like genome editing, genetic testing, and cloning.”<\/p>\n
