{"id":1019,"date":"2017-06-15T10:20:43","date_gmt":"2017-06-15T14:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wordpress\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2017-06-15T10:21:20","modified_gmt":"2017-06-15T14:21:20","slug":"expert-insight-college-admission-and-the-class-of-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wordpress\/index.php\/2017\/06\/15\/expert-insight-college-admission-and-the-class-of-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert Insight: College Admission and the Class of 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1020\" style=\"width: 724px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/arrows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1020\" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/arrows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/arrows.jpg 724w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/arrows-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">iStock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a few short months, this year\u2019s crop of high school grads will head to college.<\/p>\n<p>How did the Class of 2017 decide where to matriculate?<\/p>\n<p>NACAC\u2019s immediate past president, Phil Trout, recently offered some insight based on his experience working with seniors at Minnetonka High School (MN).<\/p>\n<p>Here are three takeaways from his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eab.com\/blogs\/enrollment\/2017\/06\/earlier-admission-is-better-but-is-regular-too-late\">interview with EAB<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1021\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pic_ptrout.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1021 \" src=\"http:\/\/nacacadmitted.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pic_ptrout-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pic_ptrout-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pic_ptrout-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/admitted.nacacnet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pic_ptrout.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phil Trout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1) Early applications are on the rise.<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve noticed a significant impact on early applications,\u201d said Trout. \u201cBy Nov. 1, 60 percent more of our students had already applied to schools than the previous year\u2014primarily for Early Action (EA) institutions and scholarship-linked priority institutions, not Early Decision (ED).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) The use of wait lists appears to be up. <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve definitely seen increased wait list numbers,\u201d Trout told EAB. \u201cThey more than doubled from the year prior, and I\u2019ve heard the same thing from other college counselors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Students are conscious of costs.<\/strong> \u201cGen Z high school graduates \u2014 including those from private high schools \u2014 have an increased affinity for affordable public flagship schools,\u201d Trout said. \u201cI had one student turn down multiple Ivy League acceptances for a presidential scholarship to a public school.
